Biography

sphygmomanometer

I'm a contributing writer and the book editor at Creative Loafing, Atlanta's alternative weekly. I write Shelf Space, the weekly book and literary arts column, and also serve as the dance critic and general "Get Tom, he'll do anything" first-person experiential writer. The latter has seen me dancing the tango, boxing, and improvising barefoot performance art in the woods. I'm also a commentator on Creative Loafing's radio show, Air Loaf, which airs on WWAA (1690 AM), Atlanta's Air America affiliate.

My work has also appeared in Gambit Weekly, Skirt, The Chattahoochee Review, Break Magazine, Atlanta Intown, the English Journal, and the Journal of General Education.

For the past few years, I've given a popular series of lectures prior to performances by the Atlanta Opera.

I have a B.A. in English from Carleton College, where I was a National Merit Scholar and graduated with honors. I have an M.A. from Florida State University's Program in the Humanities (emphasis in intellectual history), where I was a College Teaching Fellow.
